GIOTTO AND THE MUGELLO: ART, FOOD AND TRADITIONS

Giotto and the Mugello is a traditional match that today acquires other shades. Mugello is the home of the Medici family. In particular in the triangle between San Piero and Barberino. Here lie the Convent of the “Bosco ai Frati” and the castles of Cafaggiolo and Trebbio.

The Mugello is also the birthplace of three world-class artists: Giotto, Beato Angelico and Andrea del Castagno. It does not end here, however, because there are also literate insignia. Monsignor Della Casa is the author of Galateo. Luca Pulci, Bartolomeo Corsini and Dino Campana are also top tier literary figures. The only great living contemporary artist is the sculptor Giuliano Vangi of Barberino. In music are to be mentioned Marco da Galliano cofounder of the melodrama and Monsignor Bartolucci.

However, 2017 is the year of Giotto and the Mugello. In fact 750 years have passed since Giotto’s birth near Vicchio. The itinerary “In the Mugello under the sky of Giotto” is an extraordinary event, absolutely not to be missed. It is the tribute of the Mugello to its greatest artist born on the Vespignano hill in 1267.

I’ve selected a special video of introduction to the great art of Giotto.

There are 2 works of special importance to be admired: “The Madonna of San Giorgio alla Costa” and “The Virgin with the Child.”  The first is exposed at the Beato Angelico Museum of Vicchio the second is guarded in the Pieve of San Lorenzo in Borgo San Lorenzo.

Giotto and the Mugello therefore have two real gems that invite readers to come and visit. The initiative “In the Mugello under Giotto’s sky” is promoted by the Unione Montana of the Mugello with the contribution of various bodies. An itinerary that from these two works of Giotto leads the visitor to the discovery of paintings and frescoes of the territory. These works date from the 14th century and show, in varying degrees, the echo of his art.

In diversi weekend presso il museo di Vicchio e la pieve di Borgo ci sono state interessanti iniziative. There are several interesting initiatives in various weekends at Vicchio’s museum and the church of Borgo.

One of these was undoubtedly the presentation and tasting of the “Giotto cream”. This is a taste created by the local ice-cream chef Alessio Calamini. A cream of traditional Florentine egg with the typical flavors of Alto Mugello. Chestnut honey with intense and bitter aroma and a mint-like spontaneous herb called nepetella.

We would really like to invite our readers to live this particular anniversary of Giotto and the Mugello. It might be an opportunity to know our beautiful territory at the gates of Florence.
