We are in the wonderful Mugello valley. After passing the castle of Cafaggiolo, on the right you can see the Trebbio Castle of Mugello. Both castles have become UNESCO world heritage in 2013 together with the villa and the Medici garden of Pratolino. Going up to the Ischieti on the national Road 65 opens a beautiful dirt road between two uninterrupted rows of centennial cypress trees.
The Trebbio Castle of Mugello is one of the few to preserve almost intact all the beauty of the medieval construction. It dominates with its tower the small surrounding hamlet and the valley below. The view of the Medicean Fortress of San Piero a Sieve on the opposite hill is also noteworthy.
The Trebbio castle of Mugello was built around 1427 by Michelozzo by oreder of Cosimo the elder de ‘Medici. It was built on the ruins of an eleventh century castle. On this same place there was already a Lombard tower of the VIII/IX century, guarding strategic Roman roads. The Trebbio Castle was a holiday and hunting place more than a Medici stronghold despite its imposing aspect. At the time of the plague of 1476, he hosted, among others, a very young Amerigo Vespucci. He was the explorer credited with bestowing America its name.
In the first half of 1500, Cosimo I, son of Giovanni delle Bande Nere, lived here. Cosimo I would then become Grand Duke of Tuscany and true founder of the Florentine State.
The trebbio castle of Mugello retains all its original beauty despite substantial restoration work. The Italian garden is particularly effective. It has a beautiful fifteenth-century pergola on cylindrical pillars of exposed terracotta and a medieval conclusus vegetable garden. Inside you can see a courtyard with a vaulted porch, a staircase covered by a roof supported by a column and an ancient circular water well.
A plaque summarizes the history of the Trebbio castle of Mugello.
